Top 10 US States For New Tech Careers In 2025: Report

You might be surprised by the number one state on the list.

Those embarking on new tech careers may want to pack some warm clothes. According to a new report from online tech course aggregator Class Central, Alaska is the number one state for recent graduates of tech studies seeking new jobs.

The report was compiled using data from College Scorecard, a site for those looking to compare colleges. The analysis looked at the percentage of technology degrees awarded in each state, the median earnings of those in tech fields four years after graduating, and the cost of attendance.

Alaska was rated the best state for a new tech career. Technology graduates earned a median of $76,773 per year salary. The average cost in Alaska to obtain a tech degree is $12,982 per year, the report found.

Sitka, Alaska, was also recognized as a city offering six-figure jobs with little competition to fill those positions, CNBC reported. One reason: a lack of candidates in low population areas.

“The salaries of the high-paying jobs are relative to the median salaries in each state or city, so the competition rates are more reflective of a lack of candidates rather than it being a lower-paying market,” Taylor Tomita, senior outreach specialist at NeoMam Studios, a creative marketing agency that works with Career.io, told CNBC.

The second-best state for new tech careers is Wyoming, according to the report. New tech graduates earned an average median yearly salary of $60,313, four years after graduating, and the cost to study toward a tech degree is $10,537 per year.

“The demand for professionals in technology grows as many industries evolve digitally,” Dhawal Shah, CEO and founder, Class Central, said in a statement.

“From healthcare and finance to retail and education, every sector now relies on technology, increasing the need for software engineers, data scientists, cybersecurity experts, and other tech professionals.

“Tech jobs often come with greater flexibility for remote or hybrid work, which appeals to workers seeking work-life balance. This flexibility has increased since the pandemic, making tech roles accessible from a wide range of locations.

“On top of this, tech jobs in the U.S. offer some of the highest starting salaries, along with many comprehensive benefits such as stock options, retirement plans, health insurance, and paid time off.

“This compensation is often much higher than in many other fields, making it an attractive option for those with the skills to succeed,” he said.
