DoorSpace Departs Meta Platform After Zuckerberg Halts Fact-Checking, Changes Policies
“Their algorithmic feed is designed to sow division and misinformation,” DoorSpace’s CEO said in a statement.
DoorSpace, a provider of health care software, recently announced that it would no longer have presence on any of Meta’s platforms, following a controversial announcement from Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg.
Earlier this month, Zuckerberg (pictured) said that Meta would eliminate its fact-checkers and would instead put fact checking into the hands of its platform users via community notes.
“Experts, like everyone else, have their own biases and perspectives. This showed up in the choices some made about what to fact check and how. Over time we ended up with too much content being fact checked that people would understand to be legitimate political speech and debate,” Meta said in a blog post.
Meta also made some changes to the social media company’s polices, saying it was “getting rid of a number of restrictions on topics like immigration, gender identity and gender that are the subject of frequent political discourse and debate.”
There has been an outcry across the internet that Meta’s decision would foster more hate speech and misinformation on its platforms.
In reaction to Meta’s announcement, DoorSpace said in a news release it “will cease any activity and will no longer spend marketing dollars to advertise on Meta platforms.”
“Zuckerberg’s business decisions to rollback its fact checking system and to open up the platform to allow for misinformation, hate and bullying, especially against vulnerable minority groups, shows his lack of understanding on the importance of diversity and common decency. Incel culture will continue to grow and fester in that curated environment, leading to more violence against these groups in the real world,” DoorSpace CEO Sarah M. Worthy said in the release.
“I need to stand by my values and use my position as a healthcare tech leader to advocate for the individuals who are directly harmed in both their professional and personal lives by the hate and misinformation being spread on Zuckerberg’s platforms. The Meta that Zuckerberg has created has become a cesspool that sells its users’ data to the highest bidder while utilizing manipulative and dangerous tactics to keep people on the app as long as possible.” Worthy said.
“Your data is not secure on their platforms, their algorithmic feed is designed to sow division and misinformation, and the company has announced that it does not view every American equally. There is no need for our business to spend money advertising there or any reason for our brand to maintain an active presence there anymore,” she added.
DoorSpace officially deactivated its Meta accounts as of Jan. 16.
MES Computing did not receive an immediate response from Meta when asked for comment.
