This Generation Dominates The AI Job Market

A new report looks at who is doing what jobs in the AI space.

As AI continues to capture the lion’s share of tech news coverage, and tech vendors’ interest, a new report looks at just who is building AI.

The new report from marketing firm DesignRush analyzed data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The analysis looked at several metrics related to the AI-related labor force, including the most in-demand jobs, and which generation was more represented in those job categories.

Software development is the No. 1 job in the AI space, according to the report. Millennials make up the largest percentage of AI software developers, accounting for one-third of the 2 million AI developers currently in the workforce. Their tasks largely include building ML models, and AI-driven apps and infrastructure.

Boomers and Gen Xers make up 58 percent of the development workforce. New-to-the-labor market Gen Z currently makes up 6.3 percent of AI development workers.

AI management and decision maker roles are mostly Boomers, making up 54.8 percent of AI decision makers. Next is Gen X, at 32.2 percent, Millennials comprise 12.6 percent, and Gen Z has yet to advance to this level, with that generation only accounting for 0.5 percent.

The third-largest AI-related job role is that of computer support specialist with 633,000 in support roles including Q&A, help desk, and chatbot training. The Baby Boomer generation still represents 40 percent of jobholders in this role. Gen X makes up 27.6 percent of AI support workers, Millennials are 25.3 percent, and Gen Z represents 7.6 percent.

Computer systems analyst is the fourth-largest AI-related job role, according to the report. Boomers hold most of these roles at nearly 38 percent. Next largest age group serving as analysts are Millennials, at 28.9 percent, with Gen X represented at 24.9 percent. While Gen Z represents only 8.5 percent of those working as AI-related systems analysts, among the top AI jobs, it’s the one where Gen Z is represented the most.

Mechanical engineer is the fifth top AI job. There are 389,000 of these jobs held in 2025 with Boomers the largest representative age group at 39.3 percent, followed by Millennials at 32.9 percent, Gen X at 21.6 percent, and then Gen Z at 6.2 percent. Many of these engineers specialize in robotics or automation.

Overall, Boomers have the largest presence in the AI job market, especially at the decision-making level making up 1.25 million of AI-related job holders. Gen Z, while only making up under 9 percent of top AI jobholders, is clearly making its entry into the AI workforce.
